- The Salolampi Foundation is sad to announce the passing of a major benefactor Tom Hiltunen 1918–2007.
Tom Hiltunen along with his wife sponsored of Salolampi Craft Building.
More than a hundred villagers enjoy the craft building each summer at Salolampi. It is a major gift that was dedicated as Hiltunen Tupa in 1997. It also houses the Salolampi kioski and the bank.
Sadly, Tom died on June 3 after a long illness. In addition to Dona, his loving wife of 40 years, he is survived by three sisters and one brother. Private internment was at the Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
Tom’s career most recently was with the United States State Department for Foreign Services. He served in Finland, Sweden, Argentina and Chile, and he spoke five languages. His highest post was as Information Officer at the United States Embassy in Stockholm, Sweden. Dona and Tom visited Salolampi often enjoying Tom’s Finnishness and also his birth home in Toimi, Minnesota. The Salolampi Foundation expresses great gratitude to the Hiltunens.
